Guernica author Calvin White will be giving a talk on Wednesday, April 15th about the year that he spent in Central Asia. White was a member of a Doctors Without Borders team struggling to control tuberculosis in the region. The talk will begin at 7:00 pm and will take place at the Kelowna Branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, 1380 Ellis Street, Kelowna BC. White’s presentation will be based on his book Letters From the Land of Fear, which draws from White’s experiences as a mental health specialist in western Uzbekistan. While stationed there, White encountered the slow effects of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in an epidemic that failed to draw as much international attention as other higher profile emergency situations. White’s book is a journey of intimacy and hope, one that reconfigures our understanding of sadness and, ultimately, reaffirms the common spirit of humanity.
