Guernica author Bianca Lakoseljac will be signings copies of her novel, Summer of the Dancing Bear (Guernica 2012), and her collection of stories, Bridge in the Rain, at Chapters/Indigo on 70 Kenmount Road, St John’s, Newfoundland on June 3, 2014, 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Summer of the Dancing Bear is a historical novel about the rite of passage of 14-year-old Kata. The novel explores Kata’s search for a viable identity, acceptance of death, and understanding of love, through her journey of trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of a two-year-old girl when Kata was eight. The story evolves within a former Yugoslavia village community in the 1960s polarized by racial intolerance between the villagers and the gypsies. This is where Kata has grown up under the care of her grandmother.

Bridge in the Rain is a collection of interconnected short stories set in present day Toronto and linked by an inscription on a bench in High Park. The stories chronicle the travails of seven women, each dealing with a turning point in her life, be it making a career choice, resolving family crises, illuminating a secret behind a local legend, or finding an inspiration for her artistic endeavours. The stories are imbued with an international context inherent in the multicultural nature of Canadian society, linking contemporary women’s issues with concepts from history and art — from Emily Carr to the Group of Seven and from Morrisseau to the early impressionists.
