Vivian Demuth’s FIRE WATCHER on the 2013 Banff Mountain Book Competition Longlist!

We are so insanely happy to announce that Guernica’s Vivian Demuth‘s poetry collection, Fire Watcher (Guernica 2013) is a category finalist for the 2013 Banff Mountain Book Competition Longlist!

Fire Watcher is in the Mountain Fiction & Poetry category, along with Nothing Gold Can Stay (HarperCollins Publishers 2013) by Ron Rash and Short Peaks (Imaginary Mountain Surveyors 2013) by Jerry Auld.

The category award winners will be announced in October and the shortlist of titles will be eligible for the Grand Prize.  The Grand Prize will be announced at The Banff Mountain Film & Book Festival during the book awards ceremony on Thursday October 31st.

The lively poems in Fire Watcher show that, to an engaged observer with an accomplished literary imagination, the mountain forest is a complex, animated bio-community. Vivian Demuth herself is the author of a novel, Eyes of the Forest (2007), and a poetry chapbook, Breathing Nose Mountain (2004). Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies in Canada, Europe, Mexico, and the United States. She has worked as a park ranger and park warden, an outdoor educator, and as a fire lookout in the Rocky Mountains, where she hosts an annual Poetry on the Peaks event.
