Summer of the Dancing Bear is a historical novel about the rite of passage of a fourteen year old girl, Kata. The novel explores Kata’s search for a viable identity, acceptance of death, and understanding of love, through her journey of solving the mystery of thee disappearance of a two-year old girl that occurred when Kata was eight years old. The story evolves within a village community polarized by racial intolerances between the villagers and the itinerant gypsies. Kata grows up there under the tutelage of her grandmother. It is set in the 1960’s former Yugoslavia, still reeling from the horrors of the Second World War.

Bridge in the Rain is a collection of interconnected short stories set in present day Toronto and linked by an inscription on a bench in High Park. The stories chronicle the travails of seven women, each dealing with a turning point in her life, be it making a career choice, resolving family crises, illuminating a secret behind a local legend, or finding an inspiration for her artistic endeavours. The stories are imbued with an international context inherent in the multicultural nature of Canadian society, linking contemporary women’s issues with concepts from history and art—from Emily Carr to the Group of Seven to Morrisseau to the early impressionists.

Come grab a copy of these fantastic books and meet Bianca!
