Veena Gokhale Interviewed on

Exciting news! Veena Gokhale has been interviewed by Tia from StarBuzz Online about her new book, Bombay Wali and other stories (Guernica 2013). StarBuzz is the only South Asian entertainment & lifestyle newsweekly of its genre in the GTA. It covers Local Events,  Bollywood, Hollywood, Theatre, TV, Events, Movie Reviews, Previews, Fashion, Health, Finance, Realty, Sports, Astrology, etc., and also promotes local talent such as Veena.

Bombay Wali and other stories provides a startling glimpses of contemporary life in Bombay, and elsewhere. A wealthy business woman compelled by the desire to hurt her best friend; an old woman in a Tokyo apartment seeking the touch of a baby’s hand; a woman reflecting on violence as a riot rages outside her home. Tales about friendship and repulsion, family ties and freedom; violence, public and private; ambition and uncertainty, alienation and acceptance, growing up and growing old.

Veena tells Tia, “My stories are not stereotypical. I have been told the writing style, the humour, the little surprises, make them a bit different. I have characters like Dilip, a dalit students who has come to Bombay on a government scholarship from his village, and Munni, a little servant girl. I show the sexual dilemmas of late, adolescent college girls, a woman stuck in her home while there’s a riot outside, reflecting on violence. There’s  Ashok, a Westernized business man who is forced to confront tradition and heritage. And I have journalist characters in two stories – male and female. Three of the 12 stories are not set in India and do not portray Indians, adding more variety.
