Louise Dupré Wins Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry

Congratulations to Louise Dupré for winning the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry for Plus haut que les flammes (Éditions du Noroît).  The Governor General’s Literary Awards are Canada’s oldest and most prestigious awards for English- and French language Canadian literature. Winners receive both $25,000 and a specially-bound copy of the winning book created by Montreal bookbinder Lise Dubois.  Of Dupré’s collection the jury wrote, “Plus haut que les flammes is a collection of admirable restraint, where the everyday is interspersed with memories of the death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. Louise Dupré explores and questions the experience of pain evoked by places of extreme horror, and uncovers a deeply human truth.”

In 2005 Guernica published The Blueness of Light written by Dupré and translated by Antonio D’Alfonso as part of the Essential Poets Series.
