Maria has published twelve books of poetry, including the Guernica publications All That Lies Between Us, which won the American Book Award, and What We Pass On: Collected Poems: 1980 – 2009. Grace Cavalieri reviewed this collection in The Washington Independent Review of Books writing, “Gillan is skillful with the various temperaments of poetry; she makes sense of the past, its anxieties, crises and triumphs with energy that uplifts these events. As with all good stories, these could be  mistaken for no one else’s. To love and not show it must be the worst sin in poetry, so it’s almost a moral lesson to read this collection of work from a poet who knows herself and  personifies love in the form of poems.  If we do not know ourselves, who will?  Authenticity is why we read Maria Mazziotti Gillan.”
